Shocker softball starts on Feb. 7, so we grabbed assistant coach Easton Herring and third baseman Krystin Nelson for updates. Nelson reveals the team’s best pickleball player and other team-building activities used by coaches. She details why she loves playing defense and how a conversation with coach Kristi Bredbenner early last season in Arkansas helped her hitting. Herring updates us on the recruiting class, construction on the workout facility next to Wilkins Stadium and an early look at possible lineups. WSU opens the season on Feb. 7 vs. Northern Illinois in Phoenix. It also plays Grand Canyon, Colgate and Montana over that weekend.

Wichita State director of athletic academic services Gretchen Torline and Shocker baseball player Josh Livingston join the podcast to talk about Livington’s journey from an indifferent student to one with a 3.8 GPA last fall while majoring in sport management. We talk about the athletic department’s structures for study halls, accountability and mentoring. Livingston reveals his favorite class and coach Brian Green’s consequences for missing class or study hall. We also talk about Torline’s favorite success stories with former Shockers such as P.J. Couisnard, Rebekah Topham and recent graduate Tyson Etienne. Why this topic? Wichita State’s cumulative grade-point average of 3.53 for the fall semester is the highest in recorded department history, dating to 1990.
