Philosophy 315/H Late Modern Philosophy

Philosophy 315, Late Modern Philosophy, will be offered this Spring. There is also an Honors section. This class will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Some of the topics covered will include: the Scientific Revolution, perception, human nature, and rationalism. Some of the philosophers covered will include: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Emilie du Chatelet, and Immanuel Kant.

Wildlife Wednesday at the RSC

Join the RSC for Wildlife Wednesday. On Wednesday, November 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the RSC East Atrium, have some fun interacting with Tanganyika Wildlife Park’s ambassador animals. A different animal will be featured every 30 minutes.

Friday Escape at the Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes

Visit the Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes every Friday for a Friday Escape. Each Friday from noon to 2 p.m. enjoy a fun activity to start your weekend. Activities will vary each week.

Try the Pickle Pizza Pie in November

Visit the Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes in November to try the Pizza of the Month, the Pickle Pizza Pie. It’s topped with alfredo sauce, ranch seasoning, cheese, pickles and ranch dressing.

De-stress Fest

Clayton Staples Gallery presents Illustrated Nature

The Clayton Staples Gallery's second exhibition of the fall semester, "Illustrated Nature," will be on view from Wednesday, October 16th to Friday, November 22nd. Located in McKnight Art Center room 205, "Illustrated Nature" is a collection of artworks by Joanne Price, printmaker and owner of Starpointe Studio. Joanne Price will be presenting an artist talk in conjunction with the exhibition on Thursday, October 24th from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Mcknight Art Center room 210, with a reception to immediately follow until 6:00 p.m. The Clayton Staples Gallery is open to the public 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Philosophy 355 and Honors 305J, Minds and Machines

Philosophy 355, Minds and Machines, will be offered this Spring. Minds and Machines is cross listed with the Honors College as HNRS 305J. This class will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:15p.m.. Applications still open for 2025 Alternative Spring Break

Apply now for the 2025 Alternative Spring Break in Chicago, March 16th through 21st. Students volunteer with youth, education, poverty, and homelessness organizations. Alternative Spring Breaks give students an opportunity to gain experience about the unique needs of an area and travel that that location to volunteer for a week. Students volunteer with youth, education, poverty, and homelessness organizations. The trip cost is $175 per person and includes transportation, lodging and food. Philosophy 215 Intro to Ethics of Big Data and AI

Philosophy 215, Intro to Ethics of Big Data and AI, will be offered this Spring. The class will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m.to 1:45 p.m. This is an entry level course for non-professionals. Some of the topics covered will include: algorithmic bias, automated hiring, deep fakes, medical avatars, and privacy.

The Philosophy Department will be offering two courses in AI this Spring. The first course is PHIL 215, Intro to Ethics of Big Data and AI. Some topics include: mindreading implants, data scraping, and algorithmic bias. The second course is PHIL 355 Minds and Machines. Some topics include: conceiving of intelligent machinery, building intelligent machinery, and recognizing other-than-human intelligence.
