The Shocker New Venture Competition gives students the opportunity to win venture money as well as receive valuable feedback on their idea from industry experts.Each year this event connects students from all academic disciplines to take part. We are proudly serving this creation in memory of our friend and colleague Don Burris who passed away recently. Don was the Director of Plant Operations in the RSC for over 30 years, since 1989. Talks start at the half hour, with no talks from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This conference is free and open to all, with no registration required.

Each year, the Department of Sociology at Wichita State University works with several co-sponsors to organize and host a conference showcasing the gender and sexuality related scholarship happening across our state. The goal of the conference is to highlight scholarly and creative work of students, faculty, staff, and community partners around gender and/or sexuality issues and to provide an opportunity to network across departments and universities within Kansas. The conference is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and interested community members.

Dr. Sarah Deer’s lecture will give us an opportunity to learn about the crisis of interpersonal and sexual violence in Native America. Her keynote is part of the 2020 Gender & Sexuality Conference, in partnership with the Department of Sociology and multiple collaborators.

Professor Kim Warren, a scholar of gender and race in African American and Native American studies at the University of Kansas, will be the featured keynote speaker for International Women’s Day. Her topic will be “Citizenship Before the Women’s Suffrage Amendment: African and Native American Rights and Resistance.”

The Center for Women’s Studies, in sponsorship with Office of Diversity & Inclusion, League of Women Voters – Wichita, and Centennial Celebration of the 19th Amendment, will host a Creative Concourse, featuring poetry, skits, stories, and other presentations by community members and students.

Secretary Garcia was elected to serve in the Kansas House of Representatives in 2004 where she became the first Latina and the youngest female to serve in Kansas Legislature. She will be speaking on how she has gotten to where she is and giving advice to those looking to follow in her footsteps.

The Student Government Association is bringing professionals from various backgrounds to speak on panels on March 2nd, 3rd, & 4th. March 2nd is Ambitious Entrepreneurs: women from business and communication fields will describe their experiences at 6pm in RSC 142. March 3rd is Cultivating Compassion: women from education and health professions fields will do the same at 6pm in RSC 142. Finally, March 4th is Innovative Intellectuals: women from STEAM fields will speak at 5pm in JBC 246.

Student Health Services laboratory offers many in-house services including rapid testing for flu, strep, and urinalysis with 5 minute results. Sexually transmitted illnesses, anemia, thyroid, pap smears are examples of the many tests that are collected at SHS and sent to an outside reference laboratory. The SHS laboratory is licensed by the State of Kansas and the Clinical Laboratory Information Act (CLIA).

Join the Community Service Board volunteering at the United Way GIV Warehouse. Volunteers will meet at the GIV Warehouse to sort and organize items so that they may be given to local nonprofits. Sign-up at Wichita.edu/volunteerICT.

The Shocker Innovation Corps nurtures and supports Wichita State entrepreneurial teams interested in accelerating their STEM ideas, research and product commercialization. Applicants that are accepted into the Spring 2020 cohort will receive up to $2,150 in seed funding, customer validation training, mentoring from local experts, access to entrepreneurial resources, and networking with the local innovation ecosystem. Anthony Hinton is the first keynote speaker of this semester’s Diversity Lecture Series. Hinton was released in April 2015 after spending 30 years on Alabama’s death row for a crime he did not commit. He was released with the help of the Equal Justice Initiative, of which he is now an employee. Textbook Buyback starts this week at the Shocker Store! Bring in your gently used textbooks to our RSC location December 9-14, during normal hours of operation, to receive cash for your books. Rental books are due back by December 16, with a late fee charged after that date. A valid Shocker ID is required for all buyback transactions.

Do you have library fines? If you bring your overdue materials to Ablah Library on Tuesday, December 10, you can get your fines forgiven! Items must be in good condition and will not include textbooks, laptops, reserve items, etc. For more info, call Cynorra Jackson at (316) 978-5115.

The USPTO’s International Patent Legal Administration will host a two-hour seminar on considerations and options for filing foreign patent applications. The discussion will include an overview of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and the use of the Paris Convention for non-PCT countries. This event is free and open to the public.
